First Grade is “Drawing with Scissors”

First graders read about the life of Henri Matisse.  They learned that late in life, when he became ill, he had to work sitting down.  This is when he started creating his colorful collages of shapes.

Students learned to identify these three types of shapes:

organic
free-form
geometric

Then, students cut out some of each kind of shape and practice arranging them in different ways until they were happy with the look of their non-objective artwork.
