Fourth Grade Takes Value Up a Notch

Yes, fourth graders know all about value scales and tints and shades, but this lesson took them one step further to learn how to use a variety of line techniques to show value.  Students practiced and tried out hatching, cross hatching, stippling and expressive line to create value scales of 7 values and to shade geometric solids.

Hatching- parallel lines
Cross Hatching- perpindicular lines
Stippling- dots
Expressive Line- loose, random lines

Then, building on what they learned earlier in the year about realistic drawing, students drew and added value to a small still life.

Look at these student works.  Can you name the technique each chose for his/her artwork?
