Principles of Design in Grade 5

I continue to be so impressed with the focus and outstanding behavior of this year’s fifth grade class.  Starting off the year teaching the principles of design is daring because it is often difficult for students.  This year, notta.  These kids understood and applied the principles of design so well.

We began the lesson taking notes from definitions and basic examples.  We talked about each principle, related it to another concept if possible (like rhythm in music) and analyzed its use in an artwork.  Students then created small collages to illustrate each principle.  As a final assessment, students took an online (Moodle) quiz that asked them to identify an artwork’s strongest principle, then defend their choice.
